Audio-Based Social Media

A new trend has been taking over the audio-based social media world over the past few years: audio.

You might have heard others talking about Clubhouse or Spaces and wondered what they are doing.

Several platforms have taken on audio-based social media. But what does this look like? Conversations with others via voice only.

Clubhouse launched in 2020. This app started as an invite-only platform but gained massive popularity and is now open for all. Clubhouse allows you to pop in on other conversations or create a room of your own. There are conversations about everything you can imagine and endless things you can learn from others. It takes on a new form of communication through social media, as it is only your voice. You can talk back and forth here, unlike a podcast where you listen.

Spaces launched in 2020 but allowed access to all users in late 2021. It’s the same concept and is through Twitter. However, anyone can listen in – even if not logged into Twitter.

People were looking for a new way to communicate. The pandemic, overuse of Zoom and other video chat programs, and the ability to speak without showing your face are a few reasons social audio has gained such popularity. It is also easier to have an actual conversation than to type. Even voice notes in texts are increasing in popularity.

Audio-based social media isn’t going away anytime soon, as more apps have released an audio-based feature or plan to in the future.

Check one out just by listening in. You might be amazed at the connections you find through the simple conversation again.
